| | As I reflect on the Independence Day just past, I sense a nervous undercurrent running through the nation. 233 years after the Declaration, there is a certain fatalistic poignancy about things patriotic and political. It appears as though most of us are looking back to the “good ol’ days,” rather than looking forward. It seems that the consensus opinion is that we are on a downhill slide.

| | | If things go as it appears they will, this coming Tuesday will mark the end of $177 million in government funding for Abstinence Education Programs dating back to 1996. But don't think that this will be a savings to tax payers. President Obama has asked that the funding be redirected to a "teen pregnancy prevention initiative" the details of which are still "unknown." Of course there will always be those among us who are not good comrades. But that is OK too because it is estimated by the Congressional Budget Office that the fines levied upon the recalcitrants will generate $36 billion over 10 years.
